What product we choose or what services we use are not solely based on price, quality or availability. There is something on a deeper level that makes us attracted and that matter to the choices we make.
In the world of business it’s often called core values, mission statements or company objectives. It might also be called culture, vibe or just simply the feel of your business.
I had never reflected on my business core values until I started to work with a client that rubbed me all the wrong ways. I felt uncomfortable, frustrated and unappreciated and I knew that I had to figure out why.
Being clear on what matters gives you clarity on what to focus on, what to prioritize and even what you can turn down.
I asked myself what boundaries should never be crossed? Do I have non-negotiables? What kind of projects should I turn down? How do I want to be treated? And of course – it works both ways so how does this reflects on my relationships with my clients?
Your beliefs, philosophy and values.
Be ready with pen and paper or any other favourite writing paraphernalia and focus on what matters to you.
- What is important to you about the way you run your business?
- What matters in terms of how you treat your clients?
- Your staff?
- Your partners?
- Your sub-contractors?
Think about it.
This can be as simple as a single word or a policy document or something you always keep in the back of your mind when interacting with people.
Reflect and turn it in to a statement.
